The Story of Bini's Coachella Setlist

Image
Last Friday at Coachella,  the Filipino girl group BINI made their global debut on the Mojave stage, performing 10 songs for a setlist that was over 40 minutes that included a quick costume change, elaborate dance choreography, and a few breaks where they talked to the audience.   I'm a relatively new BINI fan, having only discovered them a few years ago. The group has been around since 2020, going viral on social media. As of now, Billboard's Women In Music is recognizing the group as a Global Force. Making their debut at Coachella is introducing them to so many new people.   The setlist BINI performed had an emphasis on showcasing their dancing skills for Coachella while also bringing tropical Filipino vibes. However, I also think that their setlist told a bigger story.   Shagidi: Shagidi is a dance-heavy track and a great way to get the party started.  Zero Pressure: The lyrics of the song talk about rising above the chaos that comes with being famous....

Entering My Tita Era: Reflecting On a Wedding Reception

Image
It is a truth universally acknowledged that Filipinos have very large extended families. Last weekend, I went to the wedding for one of my younger cousins. (Actually the son of an actual cousin, so first cousin once removed, but to make it easier on everyone, I'm just gonna refer to the groom as my younger cousin.) Thankfully, we were seated with our parents and some of their friends, close to the bride and groom's table. Given that I'm an introvert with food allergies and neurodivergent, attending the wedding reception was like diving into the deep end of a swimming pool. It was overstimulating due to the constant camera flashes and strobe lights. I felt like I was struggling to stay af...

Compatibility In Bridgerton

Image
Bridgerton is one of my favorite TV shows. I fell in love with it as soon as I first watched it. And while the show isn't perfect, I've been wanting to talk about why each of the couples in Bridgerton make sense in terms of compatibility. For this blog post, I'll only talk about the current couples: Daphne and Simon, Anthony and Kate, Colin and Penelope, and Benedict and Sophie.  We'll go in chronological order. Daphne and Simon start out fake dating each other. Daphne is a determined woman who knows what she wants and goes for it, for better and for worse. Disclaimer: I do not condone Daphne forcing Simon to have sex with her after realizing he is deliberately not letting her conceive.  Simon is a man with a chip on his shoulder and can't get past his anger for his father. Their courtship is founded on a mutual desire to survive the social pressures of the Ton, but develops into a genuine love. It's through Daphne's determination and unconditional love for ...
